Looks like those who complained that McCain-Feingold would prove too restrictive and limit free speech will soon be proven right. Not that many noticed, but last week saw the defeat of a reform bill meant to exempt bloggers from the restrictions of campaign finance laws. Three quarters of House Democrats voted against the Online Freedom of Speech Act, meaning the bill will not go on to the Senate. That's too bad. By choosing to not exempt the online community, bloggers and online commentators will soon be forced to untangle the maze of rules of McCain-Feingold or limit their political speech altogether - lest they be found guilty of violating campaign finance laws.
