The recent Supreme Court 'Kelo' decision paved the way for state legislatures to embark on a land grab for the hopelessly broad purpose of economic development. But good news for the citizens of my home state of North Carolina: the Civitas Institute is pushing to limit the invocation of eminent domain and to protect private property by adding an amendment to the state constitution, one that defines 'public use' and limits seizures to purposes clearly understood to fit constitutional intent.
Here's hoping that Civitas is successful in garnering sponsorship for their proposal. Otherwise, the citizens of NC will be left with little protection, save the goodwill of their state representatives.
