The merry band of bloggers here at JG is going to take a break over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but we'll return on Sunday with more of your favorite programs.
As you celebrate this time of year in the Christian or your own faith tradition, keep in mind the tens of thousands of military families who right now are confronting separation, fear, and the grief of loss. To them, the volunteer defenders of our imperfect but still free society, we must have a special gratitude. Equally deserving of our prayers, however, are the millions of people across the world - in Iraq, Iran, the Sudan, China, Ukraine, America itself, and countless other places - who struggle for freedom against the many faces of oppression. Though our languages, creeds, and specific political affiliations may differ, this universal cause seems written on our hearts. And I think the President was right to say (on September 20th, 2001) that "freedom and fear, justice and cruelty have always been at war, and we know that God is not neutral between them."
