Sales of virtual property surpassed $100 million, according to sources in a New Scientist article. I am waiting for this phenomenon to cross over into non-gaming virtual environments. Once this happens, we will see geometric increases in this type of economic activity and it will transcend geekdom.
But it won't stop there. Despite talk of virtual worlds being very 90s, these new dimensions are going to suck us in big time. More than the Internet did and in much more profound ways. Our brains are evolved to navigate 3D spaces, so technological shifts to representing information spacially (rather than 2D + text) will mean a massive leap for our capabilities, individually and collectively.
